2011/12 Crop. Certified Organic by Ceres, GmbH (an USDA agent). Vacuum-packed at origin in 30-kilo boxes. Wilfredo is a respected member of the extened Castro family of coffee growers. Wilfredo and his extended family migrated from the Bolivan Altiplano (High Plateau) in the Pacajes province towards the coffee growing region of Yungas to start a new life as coffee farmers. They eventually settled in Colonia Siete Estrellas, Chijchipani County, Caranavi Province. His farm is 10 hectares (about 25 acres), 1.5 hectares are dedicated to coffee production. He grows both Caturra (90%) and Yellow Catuai (10%)coffee varietals. His farm is situated at over 5,300 feet above sea level. Wifredo, married to Vicencia Choque, was born in 1968. He is the father of four children, 3 boys and one girl. Lidia (12), Luis (10), Wilmer (8), and Wilson (6). He has been involved in coffee growing for the past 15 years. He participated in the last Cup of Excellence® in 2009, but only made it to the National Winners phase (did not make it to the International Internet auction). His coffee won 21st Place in the 2011 Invalsa sourcing/cupping trip competition, which included the presence of 5 International judges. In 2008 when his brother Pedro obtained the second place in the Cup pf Excellence® competion, Wilfredo assisted him and he indicates that the lot was a “family submission” under the elder brother’s name, Pedro. We are very impressed with Wilfredo’s progress as a specialty coffee grower during the past few years and we are now buying his coffee directly from him as part of a long term contract at increasing, fixed-prices based on quality determined by the cupping score. Our Head Cupper gave this micro-lot a score of 86, with cupping notes as follows: Aroma: Dry fruits, figs, herbal, cedar, cinnamon. Flavor: Juicy, very sweet, dark chocolate, tangerine. Acidity: Citrus, grapes, crisp lime, bright, elegant. Other: Smooth, creamy, well balanced, good finish.
Invalsa Coffee (co-based in Boston, MA and La Paz, Bolivia) sourced these specialty-grade green coffee beans ourselves, directly from the farmer, cooperative, or estate that produced them.
You won’t find this combination of consistent quality, high grade, green coffee beans and customer service anywhere else online.
Happy roasting!
